St. Augustine’s Academy
Black and white photo of St. Augustine's Academy taken from the corner of 114th St and Fourth Avenue.
St. Augustine’s Academy was founded in 1869 as St. Augustine’s Free Institute to provide for the educational needs of the Catholic community in Lansingburgh. The cornerstone for this substantial brick structure was laid on November 5, 1899. Designed by architect Frederick M. Cummings, the building is of fire resistant construction. Although it is large in its mass, it was designed in a scale compatible with the smaller federal and Greek revival buildings in the neighborhood so that it complements architecturally the earlier structures. The original wood windows have been replaced with aluminum sash, and the dark red brick walls have been painted yellow in recent years.
