Troy Native Writes BookA young adult novel, “Swimmer,” written by a Lansingburgh resident and published by Funk & Wagnalls in New York, is making its appearance in Troy Area libraries. The book is now in its second printing.The novel’s author is Richard A. Mullins of 855 7th Ave., son of Mrs. Alma Mullins of Troy and the late Albert Mullins.He is a graduate of Lansingburgh High School, Class of 1942, and served with the infantry in Europe during World War II, losing a leg in combat.He was graduated from Syracuse University in 1950 and for a time was affiliated with the American Federation of Advertising in New York.During the last few years, he has been engaged in free-lance writing and has been traveling abroad while working on another novel soon to be published.He and his wife, Margaret, who he met and married in England, have a son, Michael, 2.Times Record. He has now left for Europe to write.He is the son of Mrs. Alma Mullins and the late Albert Mullins and the late Albert Mullins of Troy and the brother of Mrs. William J. Doyle Jr. of 469 7th Ave. He was high school correspondent for this newspaper in 1942.Mullins served in World War II and lost one leg in the European campaign when he was only 19 years old.Later he entered Syracuse University where he began writing for publications. His first writings were published in 1950 under a pen name. He wrote under a pen name. He wrote under a pen name for several years before his first novel under his own name was published. His third novel, “Sound the Last Bugle,” a war story, was published in England last year, and has been very successful.For the last three years he has been public relations director out of Washington, D. C., for the American Red Cross. His work was reporting disasters.He will do special public relations work for various organizations while he is in Europe.Mullins is married, his wife, Margaret, being English. Mullins, 79, who died Friday, June 3, 2005, at the United Helpers Nursing Home, Canton, where he had been a resident since 2001. Arrangements are with the Garner Funeral Home of Potsdam. Born January 3, 1926, in Troy, New York, the son of Gerald A. and Alma Smith Mullins. He attended Troy schools and graduated from Syracuse University in 1950. Mr. Mullins served in the United States Army during World War II and was awarded with a purple heart medal and a bronze star medal. In 1955 he married Margaret P. Wells. Mr. Wells is survived by his wife of Tallahassee, FL, and a son Michael A. and his wife Jennifer Mullins of Phoenix, AZ; by three grandchildren, Elizabeth C., Sara Jane and Alex J. Mullins, all of Phoenix, NY; and by a sister, Sandra Doyle of Troy, NY. He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Albert and Paul Mullins. Mr. Mullins was a retired professor from Syracuse University where he taught Public Relations at the Newhouse School. He is the author of 35 novels.
