SUPERINTENDENT’S HOUSE, TROY WATERWORKS
849 Second Avenue

Beginning in 1800, water was provided for the city of Troy by a series of private companies. One of these, the Troy Waterworks Company, sold its property to the city in 1832 and reservoirs were subsequently constructed near Oakwood Avenue in 1833, 1843, and 1853. Additional reservoirs were built during 1859, 1862, 1868 and 1869. A pumping station was constructed near the State dam in 1861, but was replaced in 1880 by a new station in Lansingburgh to pump river water into the reservoirs. The pumping house contained two sets of pumping engines and boilers. The contractors for the construction of the pumping station were Sherman and McDonough. Although the pumping house has been demolished, the river intake and the superintendent’s house still remain of the 1880 pumping station.
